Understanding Asthma and What an Asthmatic Patient Needs to Know

Extract taken from 'METHOD OF CURING ASTHMA Theory & Practice' by Alexander James M.D (1971)

1. Two physical methods, breathing exercises and Mechanical Vibratory Stimulation form the system of asthma treatment used by Dr. James, and are based on his discovery of the cause of asthma, which demolishes the myth about the “mystery” of asthma, and the belief that it is incurable.

2. The only significant factor in the cause of asthma is the breathing factor - or more specifically, defective breathing (mainly through the mouth).

3. The existing orthodox management of asthma by palliative bronchodilatory drug therapy is based on abstract and useless theories on the contributory factors creating asthma conditions, e.g. allergies, emotional or psychological, infections, nasal, gastrointestinal, etc. The breathing factor is usually ignored and its significance is not appreciated in spite of its evident predominance in asthma conditions.

Bronchitis is a dominant feature in asthma conditions. There is no asthma without bronchitis. No bronchitis in asthma without defective breathing through the mouth.

4. Another finding always present is the limited mobility of the chest cage, preventing its adequate expansion. This state of the chest cage plus existing bronchitis is responsible for asthma attacks, because the lungs, having inadequate room for expansion within the cavity of the chest, are literally ‘squeezed’ or ‘strangled’ by external pressure from the partly or completely immobilised chest cage.

In the light of these findings – asthma is not a disease, but is a condition of the lungs deprived of space for expansion within the chest cage and manifested by an attack of suffocation – asthma!

Proof of these findings lies in the fact that asthma attacks immediately cease as soon as mobility of the chest is achieved, and no anti-asthmatic - (bronchodilatory) drugs are necessary.

This is my discovery of the cause of asthma, upon which is based the logical form of treatment to restore the natural chest mobility as the main breathing mechanism in the respiratory function of the lungs.

This can be achieved by replacing the defective breathing through the mouth always existing in asthmatics by natural, normal, breathing through the nose and by strengthening the breathing mechanism of the chest. The special system of breathing exercises and mechanical vibratory stimulation has been elaborated for this purpose, and is effective from the first treatment.

For free, normal breathing, it is essential that there is no interference with the movement of the chest and abdominal wall. Therefore attention should be paid to clothing, which must be adjusted accordingly and be free from any pressure upon the chest cage or abdomen wall e.g. no tight dresses, no elastic undergarments or other tight brassieres, etc. No elastic around the waist in underpants, trousers etc. Belts, leather or elastic, should be replace by braces.

As bronchitis (infection) is present in all cases of asthma with nasal inflammation of the upper breathing passages (nose and throat), certain dietary considerations are advised. Other than these considerations, there are no restrictions regarding diet because the orthodox concept of asthma as due to allergy is mistaken.

While defective breathing, bronchitis and the usual poor health condition is present, physical exercises and sport must be postponed until these defects are corrected. It is easy to understand that any extra physical effort requires additional effort in breathing, which cannot at this stage be afforded by the asthmatic.

Instructions are easy to follow because by my system of asthma cure, chest mobility is improved instantly. Chest expansion is increased by 1-4 inches and more, and therefore deep breathing becomes easy, and free. Such a result of the first treatment gives the patient an unrestricted supply of oxygen and thus greatly improves general body functioning, especially the respiratory function. As a rule, no drugs are needed to prevent or combat any breathing difficult during the following night and succeeding days.

Oxygen is the best medicine for asthmatics!

Because correct understanding of the cause of asthma and the efficient means of removing the cause ensures the quick and easy restoration of normal breathing in one, two or three treatments, healing the harms of long standing asthma conditions and the damage by long standing bronchitis and by drugs to the general health, in the average case of bronchial asthma, no more than ten to fourteen days are needed to complete the therapist's treatment. In my practice the usual time for the treatment of asthmatics, with constant and positive results, is only ten days, providing the patient, or the parents of patient follow my instructions correctly, and no extraordinary health defects are present.
