Asthma expert Dr Alexander James yesterday threatened to use revenue from
his own clinic in a political fight against State Health Minister Jago.
Russian-born Dr James, 90, has developed non-drug methods of treating asthma
sufferers.
He was speaking after receiving a report from a medical panel appointed by Mr
Jago to investigate the opening of a Dr James Clinic at Wollongong Hospital.
Dr James said the minister had been forced to reconsider a clinic at Wollongong
Hospital, using his techniques.
But the minister would not say whether another assessment of his drug-free treatment
would be required.
Dr James said he wanted an early reply to this question which he had asked in
letters on October 5 and 28.
He said he would write again today and, if Mr Jago still required assessments
of his treatment, he would open his own clinic.
Dr James said he had told Mr Jago in the first letter, he accepted scrutiny
by a medical panel as the "last assessment."
The doctor demonstrated his treatment to the panel - comprising medical experts
and Health Department representatives - at Wollongong Hospital on October 13.
Dr James said he agreed to some of the report's terms but it contained recommendations,
not a firm statement, that a clinic using his methods be set up without a "trial
period."
If he opened his own clinic, he would train a successor and employ three physiotherapists,
he said.
